Justin Morgan Had a Horse by Marguerite
Henry (or any of the other M. Henry books)

Little Britches: Father and I Were Ranchers by Ralph Moody (I love
this book as did my oldest son) Amazon review
Little House: We could have a Little House
on the Prairie series meeting if someone would like to organize that. For boys
that resist reading this, Farmer Boy is a GREAT read. My oldest refused to read
any of these until he read Farmer Boy. DJ enjoys the audiobooks. It could be a
read one or all kind of session.
The New Adventures of the Mad Scientist’s
Club by Bertrand R. Brinley
Amazon review See the reviews, about a gang of kids
that have a lot of adventures.
Shen of the Sea, Chinese Stories, Arthur
Chrisman (Newberry Medal Winner) Amazon review
Something different, a lot of these kids
like mythology. The reviews are misleading as it looks like kids who were made
to read it dinged it.
The Great Brain by John D.
Fitzgerald Amazon review Really easy compared to others, but my
older son enjoyed these books way past the “recommended” age. It’s a series, so
others can be added, or add another fun classic like Thomas Rockwell’s How to
Eat Fried Worms
The Sea Wolf by Jack London Amazon review High sea adventure, a book I never forgot
reading myself. May be more difficult to read for some, there are very good
audiobook versions of it as well, widely available.
Men of Iron by Howard Pyle Amazon review Classic historical fiction set in medieval times.
There are some very nice illustrated versions of Pyle’s writing you can find in
juvenile sections of libraries. The language is a bit antiquated which I like
for reading aloud.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson
Burnett Amazon review I can't believe I've never read this classic, probably b/c we've been
reading "boy" books for all these years. The movie and reviews indicate it is
appealing to boys and girls.
From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E.
Frankweiler Amazon review I have heard so often that this is a
wonderful story, but I have never read it. Facts on Fiction review
